“I’ve definitely upset someone": Williams backs himself to be senior AFL coach again

Former Port Adelaide coach Mark Williams believes he is good enough to return to the top job at an AFL club.

Fremantle and Adelaide are both on the hunt for new coaches following the departures of Ross Lyon and Don Pyke, with Williams yet to interview for either position.

This year, he coached VFL side Werribee into the finals, and says he is enjoying his time at the club.

“I’ve definitely upset someone somewhere but I know I can do the job,” Williams told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I’m enjoying being at Werribee, it’s been a fantastic year.”

Having observed the AFL system this year, Williams provided some advice for the current coaches in the game.

“It (coaching) does require working with the entire staff that you have and making sure there’s a difference amongst each of them and they bring different things to the table and in turn stimulate and motivate the players,” he said.

“We have to create an environment where if players aren’t working, it’s the coaching.

“We probably need to look at ourselves and make sure that we can connect with the players … so it’s a fun and exciting game plan that is based around the players delivering what they can do, rather than making them into robots.

“If you can get them into a situation where they really feel like the people are caring for them, then they produce the results.

Williams coached 274 games at Port Adelaide from 1999 to 2010 and led the Power to a premiership in 2004.
