Champion Hawk “given the green light” to look elsewhere

2019-09-30T07:05+10:00

Hawthorn champion Grant Birchall has been “given the green light” to assess his options for next year, according to AFL.com.au’s Mitch Cleary.

Birchall, 31, is out of contract at the Hawks and is unsure whether he is a required player in 2020.

A veteran of 248 games and four premierships, Birchall’s last three years have been decimated by injury playing just eight games in that time.

“Grant Birchall is yet to learn his fate," Cleary told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“He’s well aware that the Hawks have got a few other things bubbling away but Grant Birchall is yet to learn his future at the Hawks.

“He’s been given the green light to look elsewhere and see if he can command a contract.”

Brisbane GM of Football David Noble was asked earlier today whether Birchall would be a player the Lions would be interested in recruiting.

“Anyone in the space that allows us to improve our run off half-back and through the wing, without specifically commenting on Grant, they’re the areas we’re trying to look at,” Noble told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

Birchall was taken by Hawthorn with pick No.14 in the 2005 AFL Draft.
