"We didn't encourage him to go test the market:" Saints wish to keep Bruce

St Kilda head of football Simon Lethlean has provided an update ahead of the official AFL trade period beginning today.

Speaking on Telstra AFL Trade Radio, Lethlean said the Saints were preparing for a very active trade period with a number of players set to join and leave.

Brad Hill is currently at the top of the list for the Saints and Lethlean said the club would be willing to part ways with their first-round pick.

"Certainly we had a pretty active year with James Gallagher our list manager. We’re well placed with a few (players)," Lethlean said on AFL Telstra Trade Radio.

"We’re not going to mess around and nickel and dime too much.

"He (Brad Hill) is a valuable player for Freo. We’ll be working pretty hard on that. We’re conscious we might have to trade a first-round pick. Brad Hill is a first-round pick type of player."

Leathlean confirmed a five-year deal had been put on the table for Hill to sign.

The Saints boss also revealed Zak Jones will exclusively deal with the Saints this trade period to provide some much needed run and dash to the squad.

"He’s certainly in our view dealing with us exclusively at the moment," Lethlean said.

"If we can get that deal done he’ll add some class and pace."

Lethlean indciated his desire to keep Josh Bruce, who is reported to have been offered a contract by the Western Bulldogs.

The Saints footy boss said the club would only trade the forward for the right price.

"He's a much-loved player," Lethlean said.

"We didn't encourage him to go and test the market, but he's got the right to do so. We would like him still playing for us, so for him to leave it would need to be an appropriate deal for the Saints."

Lethlean also confirmed the Saints were yet to be approached by rival clubs for the services of Blake Acres and that a contract for free-agent Jack Newnes was on the table but yet to be signed.
