Cats consider options with newly acquired draft picks

2019-10-09T16:30+11:00

Geelong list manager Stephen Wells has discussed what the Cats might do with the picks they landed out of the Tim Kelly deal.

Geelong and West Coast today finalised a long anticipated trade which sees Kelly go home to Western Australia to play for the Eagles on an estimated $5 million contract over six years.

In return for Kelly the Cats gained picks 14, 24, 33 and a future first round pick. Geelong now in total have five picks inside the first 37.

Wells says trading up was a possibility for the Cats.

“The options we’ve got are to trade up and maybe only have four picks and use a couple to get up the list, and that is a realistic option for us, Wells told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

"If we can’t find a club that is willing to do that for us well then, we might even trade into next year’s draft if we needed to.”

Asked if Geelong would be interested in acquiring a ruckman, particularly given they missed out on Todd Goldstein, Wells said the club was happy with their current stocks.

“Right now we’re not out trading for a ruckman," he said.

If the Cats were to trade picks and get into the top 10 of the draft, Wells said there was a specific player they would like to take.

“There’s some players we would certainly be interested in trading up if we could be sure of picking them and I guess the best way to get that is to have pick three.”

Wells said there was still a lot of to do on the draft, but reiterated that trading up was a realistic option for the club.
