St Kilda and Geelong hit roadblock in Jack Steven trade talks

2019-10-09T15:45+11:00

Geelong list boss Stephen Wells has indicated trade target Jack Steven could remain at St Kilda.

The Cats have been locked in talks with the Saints over a potential trade that would see Steven depart Moorabbin with a year remaining on his contract.

Geelong were able to secure a bundle of draft picks - 14, 24 and 37 (2019 draft) & a first-round (2020 draft) selection – in exchange for Tim Kelly who joined West Coast.

Wells is concerned a deal might not be struck as St Kilda dig their heels in over a trade involving the four-time best and fairest winner.

“Nothing has really changed there in that we’ve met with St Kilda again today, and talking to them, there’s every probability that Jack Steven will be staying at St Kilda,” Wells told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“They’ve got a good player there who had a tough year.

"Under the right circumstances we’d be happy to take Jack on down at Geelong, but we might not be able to come to a deal there.

"Knowing our draft hand as it stands today, it has given us the option of talking about all those draft picks that are in our hand and St Kilda has enquired about them all really.”

Steven, 29, played just the seven games in 2019 as he managed an ongoing mental health issue.

Geelong also hold picks 17, 36, 56, 92 in the 2019 draft.
