GWS list manager Jason McCartney has confirmed the club opted not to sign Sam Jacobs as they did not want to lose the compensation pick they received for Adam Tomlinson.
They were handed pick 40 by the AFL when the midfielder left for Melbourne and while they still wish to bring in the Crows ruckman, the Giants will now attempt to work out a trade for him.
“We’ve got a commitment from Sam Jacobs to come to our footy club and obviously Sam has been a free agent,” McCartney told SEN Breakfast.
“Now that period has passed and the only reason we couldn’t go down that path and facilitate the movement via free agency was with Adam Tomlinson going out, our pick 40 compensation pick would have been diluted back to the end of the third round.
“So we’ll need to facilitate that trade with Adelaide over the coming days.”
Jon Patton has requested a trade out of GWS and wishes to join Hawthorn.
McCartney said his club wants a third-round selection for the former number one overall pick.
“Graham Wright and myself have had numerous discussions,” he said.
“I feel we’re getting there. They haven’t been unreasonable. Jon in his position, he’s fit and healthy, the reason he didn’t play the back-half of the year was more a mental thing, so what we’re looking at, our position is we’re after a mid-third-round pick and we’re trying to work that out with Hawthorn and what they’ve got and what can go back the other way.”
The Hawks currently hold a third-round pick with selection 50. They also have 11, 30, 87 and 92.
