Mitch Cleary trade update on Daniher, Papley, Phillips and Steven

2019-10-14T08:17+11:00

Mitch Cleary provided a trade update on SEN Breakfast this morning ahead of the final three days of the AFL Trade Period.

On Joe Daniher: "I think it’s the one holding up deals to play out for the next 60 hours," Cleary said.

"If we can make any headway on that situation today then I think Tom Papley and a few others will spin out of that.

"There is no Ben King and Max King in this year’s draft so it’s a bit of a standstill right now for the Bombers.

"They want a player and I don’t think a player like Luke Parker and Ollie Florent is what they need. They need key position players and the Bombers have made that pretty well aware to the Swans.

"They are looking at a Tom McCartin and Nick Blakey but you just can’t see the Swans giving up that sort of player right now and you can understand why were in this holding pattern."

On Tom Phillips: "I think there is some realness to this because he did sign a nice three-year contract at the start of this year, so he’s got three years to run after 2019."

"They are looking to clear some sort of money. James Aish, his name has been put on the table and Matt Scharenberg is in the same boat so the Pies need to get on the front foot now.

"We all know about Moore, De Goey, Penldebury, Cox. They’ve all got to re-sign, Grundy as well.

"There’s a few other Victoria clubs that are sniffing around. His (Phillips) name is one we’re going to hear a bit more of over the next few days I think."

On Jack Steven: "Pick 37 was the pick the Cats acquired as part of the Tim Kelly trade."

"I thought that was going to be put on the table. Steven Wells has said so far it hasn’t been.

"I still think this one will get done and the Saints will pay a bit of that wage. That’s what the haggling is over at the moment, the money.

"We’re looking at about $500,000-600,000 next year for Jack Steven and the Cats won’t want to pay all of that.

"It’s about how much the Saints pay of that remaining contract for him to move to Geelong. The more the Saints pay the more the Cats will have to give up via a draft pick."

On Tom Papley: "There has been a bit movement on this one. Right now, I think Pick 9 is on the table. The other thought is Pick 9 potentially being split with Carlton to help this get done."

"A few parties around the situation felt that it probably moved on Friday. I still think we’ll see Tom Papley in a navy-blue jumper next year."
