Will Essendon move for one of two inside midfielders before deadline?

2019-10-15T10:08+11:00

Will Essendon add another midfield before the trade period shuts on Wednesday night?

Fringe Brisbane on-baller Tom Cutler is a player that has been linked to the Bombers with manager Nick Gieschen confirming his client wants to return to Victoria.

Big-bodied GWS midfielder Aiden Bonar is another player who is reportedly weighing up his future after playing just six senior games in two years.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd feels one of the two could land at Tullamarine by Wednesday night's deadline.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if one of those players (Cutler or Bonar) ends up at the Bombers by the end of this trade period as that inside midfielder,” Lloyd told Telstra AFL Trade Radio.

“The jury is out on them both on how good they can be at AFL level, but the Bombers are looking.”

Lloyd, who coached Bonar at Haileybury College, identified where his strengths and weaknesses lie having struggled to break into a star-studded Giants midfield.

“I got to coach Aiden. He had two knee reconstructions, so he only got to play a handful of games for Haileybury College,” Lloyd said.

“He is an inside, powerful player … over 20 metres he is as quick as they come. His agility and spreading from stoppages defensively is his big area as to why he hasn’t got too many games at the GWS Giants.

“He gets a little bit exposed on the spread, but in tight he is a really physical strong player.

“He is best to get out of there (the Giants) I would have thought.”

Essendon is attempting to keep hold of Joe Daniher after the star forward requested a trade to Sydney.

Picks 31, 33, 57, 65, 70, 88 is what the Bombers hold in the 2019 draft.
