Sydney CEO Tom Harley has broken down why a deal between them and Essendon could not get done for Joe Daniher.
The Swans’ final offer to the Bombers featured Carlton’s pick nine (that they did not yet have) and their own future first-round pick.
Harley said Essendon was steadfast on wanting a player to be a part of the transaction.
“We were told unequivocally that picks five and nine wouldn’t get it done. I guess when you’re talking about responsibility to your club, to get nine without the guarantee of getting Joe, I don’t think that would be responsible list management,” Harley told SEN Breakfast.
“Once we were in that sort of territory it became pretty hard and clearly there is some disappointment in that.
“We put forward what we thought was a compelling deal and that was involving two first-round picks.”
Harley revealed the two player names they mentioned in discussions with Essendon.
“With our conversations around the industry to try and find Essendon a solution, we didn’t offer players up other than Tom Papley who wanted to go and we knew Zak Jones wanted to go to Melbourne, but they weren’t players that would have satisfied them,” he said.
