Delisted Giant outlines plans post-football

2019-10-29T10:30+11:00

Dylan Buckley says he would love the opportunity to work with younger players in his AFL retirement.

Buckley was recruited to Carlton as a father-son in October 2011 but was delisted in 2017. He was then selected by GWS via the 2017 rookie draft.

“In my last two years at the Giants, the thing that I really took a lot of pleasure in was working with the young guys and just telling my point of view," Buckley told SEN Breakfast.

"I like to think I’ve got a bit of PHD in footy, I’ve had good times I’ve had bad times, I’ve been dropped, I’ve been promoted, I’ve been in the 22 and I’ve been the worst player in the twos.

"In some aspects I feel like I’ve learned every single role that there is to play.”

“I’d love to work with young guys at an AFL club … I feel like I can definitely teach them what to do and what not to do because I think I’ve done them all."

Buckley is a big believer in players having a life outside football.

“One thing I’ve always been a massive preacher of is that off field balance, having something off field," he said.

“I’d like to get there (to a club) to try and tell these guys … there is a life after footy, and the better you are off field the better you play on field because you’re not stressed, and if you’re not playing well you’ve got something to do and if you are playing well, there’s still something to go to.”

Buckley, who played 41 games over a seven-year AFL career, was delisted by GWS along with Tom Sheridan, Jake Stein and Zach Sproule.
