Longmire comments on Papley situation ahead of 2020 season

2019-11-07T08:14+11:00

Sydney held firm with small forward Tom Papley, refusing to trade him to Carlton despite his desire to return home to Victoria.

The 23-year-old had personal reasons for wishing to come to a club in Melbourne, but will remain with the Swans and coach John Longmire said it’s time to get down to business for the 2020 season.

“We made it clear to Tom and his management that we didn’t want to trade him and said he’s a valuable player for us and so that’s the starting point,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“As the process unfolded, we were working in good faith to see if something could happen and when it didn’t happen it was a matter of touching base again.

“Talking about it is pretty simple process, you just sit down and have a chat about it and get back into training and he’s got his shoulder he needs to rehab and get back in and get going.

“That’s just the way it goes, particularly with modern footy.”

Papley played 22 games for the Swans in 2019, kicking 37 goals, and finishing fourth in the best and fairest.
