Power captain's leadership credentials called into question

2019-11-08T15:30+11:00

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson has called into question whether current Port Adelaide skipper Ollie Wines should remain in the role.

Wines was linked with a move to Carlton in the trade period, but no deal was agreed upon keeping the midfielder in South Australia.

“Right now, he’s the captain of Port Adelaide,” Watson said on SEN Breakfast.

“We know that he tried to get out of Port Adelaide. If I’m one of the players there; now I’m probably looking a little bit sideways at him.”

“You’re the captain, you’re the leader of the group, you’re telling us that we should be committed, and we should be all as one and we should be completely selfless about our objectives.

“But hang on, you’re trying to get out; you want to go somewhere else.”

Watson believes the Power will need to evaluate Wines’ position heading into the 2020 season.

“I think you have to have a serious reconsideration of him being the captain,” Watson continued.

“They need have a discussion with him about whether or not he is truly committed to what it is that he says he’s committed to.”

Wines had an injury interrupted 2019 season, only playing 12 games in his first year as captain.
