Labuschagne backed to potentially captain Australia in the future

Former Test paceman Ryan Harris believes Marnus Labuschagne’s love for cricket makes him an ideal candidate to potentially captain Australia in the future.

Labuschagne’s star continues to rise following his career-best 185 in the first Test win over Pakistan – his maiden century at international level.

The Queenslander has made the No.3 spot his own since becoming the first concussion substitute during the drawn Ashes series.

He averaged 50.42 from seven innings and was only behind Steve Smith in Australia’s leading run scorers.

“He (Labuschagne) is what I call a cricket nuffie,” Harris told SEN Drive.

“He loves the game and breathes the game. Everything about the game he wants to learn.

“He spends a lot of time around Steve Smith, he is always bugging Justin Langer on questions and wanting to make himself better, and that’s a great thing in a young guy.

“There’s definitely an opportunity potentially down the track to maybe take over as captain.”

Before being considered for a leadership position, Harris wants to see the 25-year-old continue his development with the bat.

“Let him learn the game first, let him make some more runs and then if that opportunity comes up then definitely,” he added.

Labuschagne, 25, was named man of the match for his superb hundred at the Gabba.
