North Melbourne senior coach Rhyce Shaw watched brother Heath Shaw and the GWS Giants' 2019 finals campaign with interest. Speaking on SEN Breakfast, he told Jack Heverin and Nick Dal Santo what he learnt from observing the Grand Finalists.
“I noticed their ability to go out and play their game and play it for as long as they possibly could," said Shaw.
"They were challenged and they just kept finding a way to get up.
“That Brisbane game up at the GABBA was a really good example of that. I was sitting with my old man, and I said ‘it doesn’t look good, Dad’.
“(But) they just kept finding a way. They worked hard, they applied themselves really well as a group.
"They’re ruthless, the Giants. They go as hard as anyone.”
Dal Santo noted that the AFL is a bit of a 'copy-cat league' and asked Shaw if hee might be looking emulate the top teams and implement their strengths with the Kangaroos.
“We’ve got our own brand of footy and we’re really comfortable with that," replied Shaw.
“I think you’ve got to look to improve, and as coaches we’ve always got to look to find new ways for our group to get better.
"We’ve got to look to the best teams, I think it would be a mistake not to.
“We’ve certainly got to fill the gaps to the best sides.”
Shaw will be hoping to take the Roos to the finals for the first time since 2016.
