How Tyson Goldsack found his way to Port Adelaide

2019-12-04T12:00+11:00

Tyson Goldsack has revealed how he came to swap the black and white stripes of Collingwood for the black, white and teal of Port Adelaide.

The recently retired 2010 premiership player has joined Port in a development and playing role, similar to that of Brett Deledio and Andy Otten at Hawthorn.

Speaking to Kane Cornes and Andrew Hayes on SEN SA Breakfast, Goldsack said the role at Port Adelaide was one that he simply couldn’t turn down, and it was a former Magpie who approached him.

“Matt Lokan got my contact through Nick Maxwell. He heard I was coming over and floated the idea. I couldn’t be happier and couldn’t get in quick enough,” he said.

“The position came up here and it was a dual-role position so development coaching and playing with the Port Adelaide Magpies on the weekend.

“I love the idea of it, you can do your work Monday to Friday with the younger players and then gameday go out there and see how it unfolds.

“In the coaching box you can’t see a lot that goes on so the fact I’ll be out there is pretty exciting.”

Goldsack said his move to Adelaide had been on the horizon for a while, and that coaching was the natural post-career option for him.

“We planned to come to Adelaide, it’s been in the works for about two years really,” Goldsack said.

“I liked the idea of coaching. I had the chance to do it through the last two years of my career because of injury and not playing AFL.”

Known for his leadership and versatility at Collingwood, Goldsack said the long hours he’ll have to spend in the dual role at Alberton is all worth it.

“If you want to get into this environment you have to show that commitment and I have so much to learn,” he said.

“I’ve got my first training run tonight so we’ll see how we go.”

Goldsack played the last of his 165 games for Collingwood in the 2018 Grand Final.
