Fans to have say in State of Origin teams for bushfire relief match: Russell

2020-01-14T12:48+11:00

Dwayne Russell says fans will potentially have a say as to who plays for Victoria and the All-Stars in the State of Origin bushfire relief game.

According to Russell, fans could be able to vote for one player per AFL team to feature in the match that will be played on February 28 at Marvel Stadium.

The AFL announced that a maximum of three players per club will be eligible to take part, but Russell understands that may be increased to four.

“I’m told the AFL will release as soon as this Friday the selection process for the two teams: Victoria and the All-Stars," Russell told SEN's Dwayne's World.

“But I’m also told fans will get a say as to who plays. I’m also told that this could move out to four players per club because the wearing of the Big V and an All-Star jumper is something that some players are desperate to have on their resume.

“I can tell you for a fact that the AFL is talking with club CEOs today about the selection process, about what the AFL clubs will be happy with and what the AFL is proposing to the clubs.

“Fans, I’m told, will get to vote for one player per AFL team that they would like to see.”

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick will take charge of Victoria while Sydney counterpart John Longmire will lead the All-Stars.

Russell added that both Hardwick and Longmire are likely to be mic'd up as well as certain players.

The AFL agreed to a $2.5million donation to support those impacted by the bushfire crisis.
