Luke Hodge says Brisbane must stay hungry and keep evolving from a tactical perspective to stay ahead of the curve.
The Lions will need to handle the heightened expectations in 2020 after making the finals for the first time since 2009 last season.
Hodge, who retired after Brisbane’s semi-final loss to GWS, gets the sense the Lions have unfinished business by the way they have approached the pre-season.
“You could tell when the pre-season started, they were eager to make up for the two finals losses to Richmond and GWS,” Hodge told SEN Breakfast.
“I think one thing that gets teams caught, and I know it did in 2008 with Hawthorn, is blokes are comfortable with where they are at and also if the game style doesn’t change, that you sort of get left behind.
“The motivation is there with the young Lions group but also the coaches realise that they need to continue to adapt the game style.”
Hodge, 35, took up a part-time mentoring coaching role at Brisbane after calling time on his decorated 346-game career at the end of 2019.
