Bruce highlights difference between Dogs and Saints training methods

2020-01-17T14:00+11:00

Western Bulldogs recruit Josh Bruce says pre-season training at his new club differs to what he experienced at former club St Kilda.

Bruce departed the Saints to take up a long-term contract at the Bulldogs who hope he can provide additional firepower up forward in 2020 and beyond.

One thing Bruce has noticed at the Dogs is the increased focus on ball work on top of the strength and endurance programs.

“I’ve definitely noticed, and I’ve said it before, that there’s a lot more skills and hands on stuff than what I’ve previously been used to, so it took the quads a bit to get used to that,” Bruce told SEN Breakfast.

“I’ve settled in well to their training program and haven’t missed a session yet, touch wood.”

While admitting to nerves before meeting his new teammates, Bruce says it’s been a different experience compared to when he joined the Saints from GWS.

“The first week or so I as very nervous, it feels like your first day of school. It definitely feels a little bit different to last time (I moved clubs),” Bruce said.

“Last time I moved it was interstate, I had no idea about Melbourne or really about the AFL environment at all coming from the Giants, because we were such a young group and such a young team.

“They’ve welcomed me in with open arms and it’s all going really well.”

The Bulldogs bolstered their key position stocks by adding Bruce and former Crow Alex Keath during the trade period.

Bruce, 27, has booted 171 goals in 113 games for both the Saints and Giants.
