What Chris Fagan took from Brisbane’s sudden finals exit

2020-01-22T10:06+11:00

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan is confident the club has got to the bottom of their straight sets finals exit in 2019.

The Lions were one of the surprise packets of last season, finishing second on the ladder before losing both their home finals to GWS and Richmond respectively.

Fagan said it was vital his side handled the big finals moments better after an extensive post-season analysis of what went wrong.

“The biggest thing we learn in finals is when the better teams are playing the better teams, you can’t make too many little blunders,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“When I examined the tape at the end of those finals, we didn’t lose those games because our effort was poor or we didn’t play with enough energy or we didn’t believe in ourselves, it was more just little moments.

“We’ve got to get better in those big moments and understand that those big moments start when the siren goes at the start of the game, not in late five minutes so there’s a bit of learning there.

“I’d like to think if we can maintain our rate of inside 50s that we had last year, we can convert a few of those to scores. Even know we were number one for offence, I thought we could’ve done a bit better in that regard.

“The bottom line is our biggest improvement last year is for the first time, the club finished in the positive for contested ball differential and we’ve got to make sure we maintain and improve in that.”
