How big an impact could Jack Steven have on Geelong in 2020?

2020-01-28T08:51+11:00

Geelong enters 2020 with a wildcard in four-time St Kilda best and fairest winner Jack Steven.

The midfielder has struggled with mental health issues, but moving closer to his family in regional Victoria will hopefully allow him to find his feet and return to his best.

Cats star Patrick Dangerfield believes they will see the best of him in 2020.

“He’s been great, (Steven). He’s won four best and fairest awards and you can see that in the way that he moves he’s a very good player,” Dangerfield told SEN Breakfast.

“He had a hiccup a couple of weeks back, but he’s just about back in full pre-season training so it’s been great to have him.

“Obviously with the loss of Tim (Kelly), he’s going to be an important player for us and we think he’s that line breaker and goal kicker that we have seen him do across his career.

“I’m confident (he can get back to his best). He’s from the region and the most important thing we can offer as a club is to get him right and back to enjoying footy and obviously it helps geographically where we’re set up.

“We just want him to be happy and when he’s happy he’ll play some great footy and he’s a really important player with the young list that we’ve got.

“It’s important that we get him up and rolling early because we’ve got a tough fixture early.”

Steven played 183 career games for the Saints and former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon is very interested to see how he goes in 2020.

“I think he’s the most intriguing player of the summer, for me, Jack Steven,” he said.

“He’s got pace, he’s got break-neck speed, he’s a four-time best and fairest winner and if he can approach that, I know they’ve lost Tim Kelly, what an injection (Steven) is into that side.

“He’s different to Kelly – at his best he was as dynamic as Kelly – but he’s different now and he adds something different if he can get back to it.”
