Why Daniher injury woes should not deter Swans

2020-02-05T15:33+11:00

Joe Daniher’s injury problems shouldn’t deter Sydney from making another move for the Essendon forward, says Dwayne Russell.

Bombers GM of Football Dan Richardson told SEN Breakfast that Daniher could potentially miss half of the 2020 season after requesting a trade to the Swans last year.

The 25-year-old has missed a significant amount of football over the last two years due to lingering groin problems, but Russell believes the Swans need a player of Daniher's ilk with Lance Franklin coming towards the end of his career.
“I still think you get him if you’re the Sydney Swans,” Russell told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“Now you don’t want to pay too much for him, but I still think you get him.

“They (Sydney) are in this sort of transition phase. They’ve got a youngish list; they’ve got the third youngest list in the competition and they’ve got one really old guy in Lance Franklin … and he’s coming to the end of this career.

“I think they need drawcards in Sydney, and I think Joe could be that kind of guy. He’s got a Sydney connection of course with the Daniher family, so I think he would be the right guy for them to get.

“They don’t want to pay too much for him, so they are going to get him as a free agent, what's better than that?”

Essendon and Sydney were unable to agree on a deal for Daniher as talks broke down on trade deadline. He is a restricted agent at season's end.
