Ray Shaw has revealed a mid-game admission from son Heath during GWS' Grand Final thrashing to the hands of Richmond last season.
The Tigers romped to an 89-point win in one of the most one-sided Grand Finals in VFL/AFL history and Shaw says even Heath waved the white flag as the Giants could only muster just three goals for the entire match.
“It was all over at half-time,” the Collingwood great told SEN’s This Is Your Sporting Life - For Tobin Brothers Funerals, celebrating lives.
“I remember Heath (Shaw) talking to us afterwards and he said to Dusty (Dustin Martin) halfway through the third quarter: ‘Why don’t they just blow the siren now!’
“You try, but you are not going to get there. They were shot.”
After watching GWS in their pre-game warm-up, Shaw sensed something was amiss despite it being their maiden Grand Final appearance.
The build-up to the match centred around the fitness of captain Phil Davis who underwent a fitness test on a calf complaint less than an hour before the first bounce.
“I go to every game early and I like to watch the warm-up,” Shaw said.
“You can see whether they are on or they’ve got a bit of spring, and Rhyce (Shaw) and I were talking about it, they didn’t have any spring even before the game.
“In the warm-up they were flat, they didn’t look lively at all.”
