“Why not? Why can’t we?”: Port Adelaide not shying away from premiership talk

2020-02-25T08:23+11:00

Port Adelaide forward Charlie Dixon is embracing the club’s expectation of winning premierships.

Power coach Ken Hinkley recently made an ambitious call that he is seeking a second AFL flag in 2020, the year of the club’s 150th anniversary.

Addressing Hinkley’s “look out, we’re coming” comments, Dixon is adopting a similar mindset centred around a “why can’t we?” attitude.

“Kenny likes doing that sort of stuff,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“Well, why not? Why can’t we?

“We’ve been in that 9th-10th spot for a while now and it is a frustrating spot to be.

“It’s sort of now or never. We’ve got the time, we’ve got the list and we’ve got the players to be able to do it.

“I think we are definitely a chance to do that. If you are not thinking about that, what are you even doing this for?

“That’s the goal, so why not?”

But do Port have enough swagger to genuinely contend at the pointy end?

“I think so. You look around the group and there’s a lot of boys who carry themselves well, and under pressure can handle a lot,” Dixon added.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what this year has for us.”

Power assistant Michael Voss, who won three flags as Brisbane captain, is also entering 2020 with an expectant outlook as the club tuned up with a win over the Lions in the Marsh Community Series on Sunday.

“For me, the expectation was there whether he (Hinkley) put it there or not,” Voss said on SEN SA’s Kymbo & The Rooch.

“He probably went out and said what everyone was thinking, which is not a bad thing.

“We’ve had a really good build-up over a couple of years. We weren’t able to get the consistency we were after last year and we are obviously searching for that this year.

“You can sort of feel some of that hope that you build over pre-season is well and truly converting into some belief.

“But you can’t get belief without putting some wins on the board and that’s why it was a nice start to be able to win against Brisbane.”

The Power will look to back up their opening victory against the Lions when they take on the Western Bulldogs in Whyalla on Saturday, March 7 in the second of their Marsh fixtures.

They’ll kick off the season proper against the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on March 21.
