Australia name big guns for Davis Cup playoff tie

2020-02-25T11:13+11:00

Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has named both Alex De Minaur and Nick Kyrgios for next month’s playoff tie against Brazil in Adelaide.

Australia’s top two male players have both battled injuries in the last few weeks but are fit to play at Memorial Drive in the two-day event from March 6.

Hewitt has also named Davis Cup debutant Jack Duckworth on the back of good form which has seen him rise to a career-best world number 71.

De Minaur confirmed he’s fully recovered from the abdominal injury which saw him withdraw from the Australian Open last month.

“I’m feeling great and looking forward to getting back on court with all the Aussie team,” De Minaur said on Tuesday.

“It’s always an amazing opportunity to represent your country, and we had a pretty good start to the year in Brisbane and Sydney at the ATP Cup. All the boys did an amazing job and it will be great to get back together and hopefully get the win over Brazil.”

If Australia successfully beat Brazil over four singles and one doubles rubber, they’ll qualify for the Davis Cup finals in Madrid later this year.

Australia reached the quarter finals of last year’s event, losing to Canada before Spain eventually won the inaugural title of the revamped event.
