“Funny little bloke”: The Victorian teammate that surprised Dustin Martin

2020-02-29T15:25+11:00

Richmond's Dustin Martin and Sydney's Tom Papley were two of Victoria’s best in Friday night’s highly entertaining State of Origin bushfire relief match at Marvel Stadium.

Papley booted a game-high five goals in the Big V’s 46-point win over the All-Stars while Martin was named best afield with 23 disposals and two goals.

It adds to the superstar Tiger's impressive CV that already includes two premierships, two Norm Smith Medals, a Brownlow Medal and three All-Australian blazers.

Martin says the cheeky Swan left a lasting impression on him having not played with the majority of the 27-man squad.

"Little Tommy Papley's a funny little bloke,” Martin told reporters post-game.

“To play with guys like (Scott) Pendlebury, Danger (Patrick Dangerfield), all the guys to be honest … it was definitely a really cool experience.

“It was just cool to meet other people … keep in touch with them from now on and who knows, might play with them in the future if they do (State of Origin) again.”

Gun GWS pair Josh Kelly (22 disposals and four goals) and Toby Greene (23 disposals and four goals) also starred for Victoria in front of a crowd of 51,052.
