"I can easily see him fitting in": de Boer on Giants draftee

2020-03-02T12:00+11:00

GWS Giants tagger Matt de Boer says there’s every chance new recruit Tom Green could slot into the round one team following an impressive Marsh Community Series performance.

Green, who was taken with Pick 10 in last year’s AFL Draft, kicked two goals from 21 disposals in the Giants big win over cross-town rivals Sydney on Saturday.

29-year old de Boer told Garry Lyon and Tim Watson on SEN Breakfast that Green is doing everything he can to push his case.

“Tom Green can seriously play, he’s very hungry to learn as well on a daily basis,” he said.

“He’s come in with a really enthusiastic attitude and those hands look pretty clean so I’m happy to run past him when he has the ball.

“I don’t envy Leon and the match committee team coming up in a couple of weeks. He’s doing everything he can, he’s still getting up to speed with our principles and team defence, structures and everything else they have going on.

“With his pure ability to contribute to the team and his hunger to learn, I can easily see him fitting in.”

Standing in as captain for Stephen Coniglio, de Boer said he relished the experience.

“I enjoyed stepping up as captain and told Cogs he’s not required from now on,” he said.

“I was fortunate in my time at Fremantle to learn under some fantastic leaders like Matthew Pavlich, Luke McPharlin and David Mundy.

“You really just see the impact they can have on a younger playing group and the confidence you can get from that.”
