Player manager reveals new details on AFL Amazon documentary series

2020-03-04T10:32+11:00

Player manager Liam Pickering has revealed AFL clubs have cracked down on the amount of access Amazon will have in an upcoming documentary series.

The streaming giant has reportedly signed a deal with Jam TV to produce a six-part access all areas series focusing on players, coaches and administrators.

But Pickering said Amazon’s plan has been curbed somewhat by the clubs, who have asked to tick off on any vision before it’s publicly released.

“My understanding was initially what they wanted to do is have unfettered access to cut up what you want like the cricket Amazon documentary,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“If you’ve got a coach, you’ll be in every coach address and they’ll cut it up as they want and of course the clubs said no.

“What I believe now is the case is the AFL clubs now have final say on what goes to air and then it comes back to the clubs – it’s not owned by Amazon. “That’s what I’ve heard and that’s the negotiation.

“I hear Eddie Betts is going to do it – in this case all the vision will go back to (Carlton)."

Pickering, who manages Geelong great Gary Ablett, confirmed he held preliminary talks about him being involved.

“We had a discussion about Gary Ablett (being in the documentary series) just before Christmas about whether he would potentially be interested in it,” he said.

“At that stage there was still a lot of work to be done on it.

“They’ll be a smattering of coaches, players and administrations. We haven’t got anyone involved so that’s where that is.

“It would sound like Leon Cameron or Stuart Dew (will be involved).

“To get (the documentary) to air Amazon will still need to get the tick from the clubs.”
