AFL to wait until next week for Round 1 decision

2020-03-13T17:47+11:00

The AFL is yet to make a decision regarding the men’s competition and Round 1 as the coronavirus situation unfolds and develops.

Whether games continue and are played behind closed doors or the season is postponed, the seriousness of the decision sees headquarters wanting more time to make a call.

SEN Chief Sports Reporter Sam Edmund was outside AFL House and reports that no decision has been made at this stage.

“The AFL have abandoned any plans to have a press conference,” Edmund told SEN’s Whateley.

“Of course, there was nothing official put out, but the jungle drums were beating that they were going to give us an update.

“That will now not be happening tonight. It might be Monday we get a full blown update about how Round 1 is going to play out.”

The AFL is weighing up whether to play games in October and have raised the possibility with the Melbourne Cricket Club.

The ICC has a 21-day exclusion zone required for turning grounds around for cricket, with the T20 men's World Cup getting underway October 18th.

AFLW games will continue this weekend and will be played behind closed doors without fans as of Saturday.

The federal government has banned large gatherings of over 500 people, starting Monday.
