"Same old Melbourne": The 2019 trap the Demons fell straight back into

2020-03-23T09:14+11:00

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon was disappointed by the performance of his old side on Sunday.

The Demons went down to West Coast by 27 points, winning the inside 50s by 10, but failing to put that on the scoreboard.

Tom Barrass, Shannon Hurn, Lewis Jetta, Brad Sheppard and Jeremy McGovern combined for 37 marks, picking off forward thrusts with regularity.

Lyon believes this highlights that Melbourne is making the same mistakes as they did in 2019.

“(It was the) same old Melbourne,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“They dominated field position for much of the game and had 10 more inside 50s.

“All that did is it went inside 50 and gave West Coast the chance to rebound and go up the other end and kick a goal.

“West Coast looked pretty awesome. The Demons’ effort wasn’t an issue, they had a crack, Jack Viney was superb, but gee, the connection going forward … at least they’ve got 12 weeks to work on it.”
