Brother of Melbourne defender goes missing after fishing trip

2020-04-06T14:21+10:00

There are grave fears for the brother of Melbourne defender Michael Hibberd, who has been missing for more than 24 hours after leaving on a fishing trip.

Hibberd’s brother is one of two men who haven’t been seen since leaving the Flinders boat ramp before 6am on Sunday to go fishing in Westernport Bay.

Strong winds and heavy rain battered the Mornington Peninsula on Sunday, with a peak gust of 63kmh recorded at HMAS Cerberus that morning.

Emergency services started their search last night after a friend raised the alarm just after 9pm when the pair could not be contacted.

Water Police, Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue agencies, along with the Victoria Police Airwing, are part of the search operation for the missing men.

The duo were said to be in a three-metre aluminium “tinny” with an outboard motor.

The Melbourne Football Club isn't making comment.

Recreational fishing has been banned under Victoria’s coronavirus stay-at-home directions.
