Are interstate players underrated because of a Victorian bias?

2020-04-09T10:31+10:00

Former Port Adelaide midfielder Kane Cornes believes a Victorian bias still well and truly exists in the football media.

Cornes looks to his own playing days and believes key forward star Warren Tredrea is someone who remains perennially underrated, while the likes of Robbie Gray and Toby Greene don’t get the credit they deserve nowadays simply because they are outside of the Melbourne bubble.

“There’s a number of players particularly from (outside Victoria) that don’t get the credit they deserve,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast.

“I played with Warren Tredrea and I never really thought he got the credit in Victoria for how good a footballer he was.

“The guys like Matthew Lloyd and Nick Riewoldt and Matthew Richardson get lauded – Tredrea was just as good, particularly there for a four-year period where he was the All-Australian centre half-forward.

“Now currently, I look at Mark Robinson’s top 50 players and Robbie Gray is not in his top 50. Like, are you kidding me Robbo?

“How you can not have Robbie Gray in your top 50 is a joke. If he was playing in Victoria, he would have been in the top 30.

“There’s definitely still that Victorian bias and Toby Greene suffers from that, Robbie Gray suffers.”

The 32-year-old Gray has played 219 games and kicked 318 goals, with Cornes previously suggesting he might just be the club’s best ever player.
