Ranking the greatest centre half forwards of the AFL era

2020-04-21T13:26+10:00

Who are the top 7 centre half forwards of the modern era?

Former St Kilda coach Scott Watters has gone through all of the greats and managed to come up with his list.

The seven combine for an insane 4363 goals across their collective careers.

However, Hawthorn and Sydney superstar Lance Franklin has been left off the list.

Here’s Watters’ top seven:

1. Wayne Carey
2. Dermott Brereton
3. Jonathan Brown
4. Warren Tredrea
5. Nick Riewoldt
6. Matthew Pavlich
7. Josh Kennedy

“If I’m picking a team right now and we’re playing a Grand Final tomorrow, this is the way that I’m going,” Watters told Footy SA & WA

“Carey was everything you’d want to see in a leader and a centre half forward.

“Brereton was a big game player and it’s hard to go any better than that.

“Brown has the premierships, a testament to his performance in big games.

“Tredrea jumps up the list for me. I just thought as a leader in big games he was outstanding.

“It was very hard to split Riewoldt and Pavlich and I think Josh Kennedy just sits behind those other six.”

Former Port Adelaide midfielder Kane Cornes would make a few changes to the list.

“I’d probably have, just for their careers and their numbers and the amount of footy they played, I’d probably have Pavlich and Riewoldt just ahead of Tredea and I’d have Pavlich just a tick ahead of Riewoldt,” Cornes said.
