Punters will be treated to harness and greyhound racing on Saturday mornings in May.

GM of Harness Racing Victoria Stephen Bell revealed this morning on SEN Track that both the trots and the dogs have been given the green light to race prior to midday of a Saturday for three weeks next month.

“We’ve finally got approval from TAB and Sky that we can commence Saturday morning racing,” Bell said.

“It will kick off on the 9th of May and for a three-week period we will be racing on a Saturday morning.

“Greyhound Racing Victoria has sign-off for those three days as well. We’ve gone in shoulder to shoulder with the greyhounds.

“Roughly we are looking at a 9am to 11:30am schedule. We’ll have seven races with eight-horse fields. We are racing at Melton for the three times.”

Bell is hoping the innovation will have an impact overseas, particularly in the US.

“The really important play for this is the international market,” he added.

“This will go live into the States. In New York it will be about the 6pm zone for the first race. They’ve got nothing to bet on at the minute. We’re going to be the only product in town.

“Wagering has lifted a little bit. We’ve had more eyes on our sport within Australia so now it’s a great opportunity to take an itnernational approach, get more eyes and see if it works.”

Bell later assured via Twitter that: "The Saturday morning races at Melton are transferred from Monday 11th, 18th and 25th. So not additional meetings in the region."
