Clarkson “wore thin” on Franklin during final season at Hawthorn

Jordan Lewis has given an insight into the relationship between Alastair Clarkson and Lance Franklin during their final year together at Hawthorn.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Lewis says Clarkson’s attempts to pull Franklin “into line” eventually “wore thin” on the forward who completing a shock move to Sydney at the end of 2013.

“It’s funny when you look back on your career and certain things that happened in your career,” Lewis said.

“There were probably things that happened along the way where Clarko and the coaching staff may have seen Buddy going down a path where it was outside maybe what the team wanted or required.

“And that was from a performance point of view but also the way he was probably conducting himself off the field, and they tried to pull him into line, I suppose, on a number on occasions.

“Sometimes it was warranted but sometimes I don’t think it was and that probably just wore thin on him a little bit … and he just needed a fresh start.”

Franklin, 33, has two years to run on the blockbuster nine-year deal he signed with the Swans.
