The freak incident that “abruptly” ended Bulldogs great's career

2020-05-20T15:30+10:00

Western Bulldogs great Brad Johnson has reflected on the golf cart incident that he claims “abruptly” ended his career.

A cart carrying drinks ran into the back of Johnson at training that aggravated an pre-existing Achilles injury.

The former Bulldogs captain believes he could have played for “three or four” more years if it wasn't for the freak injury.

“I missed a month of footy off the back of it,” Johnson told SEN’s Dwayne's World.

“I got clipped (by the golf cart) … and I was coming back from my Achilles injury and I played Round 1.

“The golf cart had a box underneath it and it clipped my Achilles and it just instantly went back to pretty much triple the size in terms of swelling up.

“That took a month to get it back down to feel comfortable again … so a golf cart pretty much ended my career – I thought I had three of four more years left at the end of 2010.

“It very much ended abruptly after that.”

Brad Johnson retired in 2010 after playing a club record 364 games, scoring 543 goals.
