Collingwood “investigating” having virtual fans on match day

2020-05-22T13:19+10:00

Collingwood CEO Mark Anderson says the club is “investigating” the idea of having virtual fans on match day amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on SEN’s Dwayne’s World, Anderson explained that virtual cardboard cut-outs of members would be used to ensure there's fan representation inside the stadium.

“One of the things which kind of reinforces just what we’ve been talking about around the passion of our fans and members is looking at having some virtual members in the stands,” Anderson said.

“We’re just investigating that now and we’d love to do that and while it’s virtual it does demonstrate that we’ll try and get our members and fans in there in some way that’s representation of the big Magpie Army. We’re are working through that now.

“The fan one is fundamentally a virtual cardboard cut-out of the image of the person.

“Our plan is to do a sample of that across our membership base and run a competition to be in the stands even when you can’t be. That’s the plan and the thinking at the moment.”

German club Borussia Mönchengladbach sold over 16,000 cut-outs at $20 per person for their first home Bundesliga match since the shutdown.
