VFL/AFL legend Leigh Matthews says the allowance for marquee players in the salary cap is a “totally ridiculous” proposition.
Under a plan floated in recent weeks, the league’s biggest names could be paid outside the salary cap allowing the game’s stars to earn more money than ever before.
A marquee system exists in other sports but Matthews believes it wouldn’t work in footy.
“Totally ridiculous,” Matthews told Sportsday when asked about the suggestion.
“I mean, you might as well add a couple of million to the salary cap if you want to do that.
“There’s not point having a salary cap if you’ve then got marquee players extra to it.
“Who is pushing the marquee players issue? It must be player managers or something like that.”
The league’s salary cap is set to be dramatically slashed beyond this year due to the current COVID-19 crisis.
