Star Hawk and Blues ruckman suffer injury blows as contact training returns

2020-05-27T08:15+10:00

Hawthorn star Jaeger O’Meara has suffered a face fracture during the club’s first contact training session following the COVID-19 shutdown.

The Hawks vice-captain, who played in his side’s round one win over Brisbane in March, was sent for scans immediately following the incident.

Football boss Graham Wright said the club would take “cautious” approach with the season restart rapidly approaching.

“Jaeger copped a knock just above his eyebrow in yesterday’s session and scans revealed a minor fracture,” Wright told the Hawthorn website.

“Fortunately for both Jaeger and the club, he won’t require surgery and it won’t impact his ability to train.

“He will continue to train with the group, albeit we will take a cautious approach to his contact work while the fracture heals itself.”

Meanwhile, Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning will miss round two after suffering an ankle sprain at training on Monday.

The Blues big man is expected to be sidelined for up to a month.

Blues fitness boss Andrew Russell is hopeful the 20-year-old will be available for selection in the early rounds of the rebooted season.

“Tom injured his ankle unfortunately yesterday, he was having a shot on goal and one of the players came across for a smother and awkwardly fell across his ankle,” Russell told the Carlton website.

“He has got a lateral ligament sprain. Most players when they hurt their ankle, they hurt this ligament.

“We expect it to settle down in three to four weeks, after which he should be available to play. We probably don’t expect him to be available for Round 2 but expect him to be available in the early rounds of the season."

Fellow Blues ruckman Matthew Krezuer suffered a metatarsal injury during his side's opening-round loss to Richmond, sidelining him for up to four months.

Off-season recruit Marc Pittonet is expected to fill the void during Carlton's Round 2 clash against Melbourne with both Kreuzer and De Koning injured.
