MAJAK Daw’s season is in jeopardy after the North Melbourne defender suffered a ruptured pectoral muscle.
Daw was on Friday completing a chest exercise in the Arden Street gym when the injury occurred. It is to the right side of his chest.
It is a cruel setback for the North’s athletic defender, who has not played at AFL level since 2018 after horrific hip and pelvic injuries suffered in a fall from the Bolte Bridge.
Daw was set to play in Round 1 before being hit with a virus and was finally set for a highly anticipated comeback against GWS on June 14 in what Kangaroos head of football Gavin Brown said would be a story “for the ages”.
But this latest setback has thrust Daw’s 2020 season into doubt. North Melbourne will decide on Monday whether Daw will undergo surgery on the muscle.
If he goes under the knife it’s understood Daw’s season would almost certainly be over.
But if Daw can escape surgery, there is some hope he could return this year given his healing powers.
Daw had impressed throughout pre-season and after North Melbourne returned to training and was set to hold down a key position post in coach Rhyce Shaw’s back six alongside Robbie Tarrant.
But Daw’s injury is the latest in a growing number of setbacks to key players across the competition as they race to regain peak fitness before the Round 2 resumption from June 11.
Daw is also out of contract at the end of the year.

North will decide on Monday if Daw needs surgery and if so, would almost certainly miss the season. But regardless, it’s a long term injury. Daw was doing a chest exercise in the gym on Friday when he ruptured the pec. Cruel blow.
