Is this superstar the modern day version of Lenny Hayes?

2020-06-02T12:27+10:00

Lenny Hayes is set to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a decision universally applauded given the star Saint was admired by all during his playing days.

The midfielder had a unique ability to earn the respect of supporters of all other clubs, no matter how dominant he was against them.

Garry Lyon posed the question to Tim Watson on SEN Breakfast - who is the current equivalent of Hayes?

“Loved by everyone and loved by opposition supporters too which begs the question … who is the modern day Lenny Hayes?” Lyon said.

“The modern day Lenny Hayes is a player who plays for the opposition who you never boo, you just love, not even begrudgingly love, you openly share your admiration for that player.”

Carlton captain Patrick Cripps came to mind first for Watson.

“I’ll give you one nomination, right now Patrick Cripps is in a similar mould to Lenny Hayes,” Watson said.

“Fans love the guys that just compete. Often they’re the ones who have nothing to say, they just go out there and compete week in, week out and give everything that they have.”

Cripps has played 102 career games for the Blues and was named the AFLPA MVP for the 2019 season.
