FFA boss open to A-League winter shift

2020-06-03T15:24+10:00

Football Federation Australia CEO James Johnson is open to exploring the possibility of moving the A-League competition from summer to winter.

The A-League season currently runs from October through to May but former Socceroo John Aloisi has led calls to restructure the Australian football calendar, so it aligns with Asia and the domestic National Premier League competitions.

Johnson will weigh up the pros and cons of a potential winter season before deciding whether the switch is feasible.

“It’s on the table (shifting the A-League to winter), we need to talk about it,” Johnson told SEN Mornings.

“There are some questions that I would like answered: Does a shift to the winter help us in terms of our alignments with our huge participation base of 2 million participants nationally?

“Does it help us as we establish a domestic transfer system? And does it help our clubs perform better in the Asian Champions League?

“I think we need to look at it and have an objective discussion about it. If there are more pros than cons, it’s something I think we should be exploring further.”

The A-League is waiting on approval from broadcaster partner Fox Sports before resuming the current season in mid-July.
