How much Lions paid Brown during 2001 flag season

Jonathan Brown has revealed how much Brisbane paid him during the 2001 premiership-winning season.

Brown, a two-time All-Australian and Coleman Medallist, was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night along with former Lions teammate and champion midfielder Simon Black.

“It was obviously professional in the form that that was all we did; we didn’t have any other jobs,” Brown told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“The pay level … I think I got paid in my first premiership $30,000 and you would have got match payments, you might have got $1200 a game or something like that.

“It wasn’t ridiculous money, obviously the big boys were on pretty good money at that stage but it was just so much fun that we had.”

The triple premiership Lion explained how professionalism in the AFL has changed since his early playing days.

“You’d be out celebrating every Saturday night after a game and then we’d always meet for breakfast the next day,” Brown said.

“You’d have your recovery and the boys are probably still a bit hungover, we’d all go and have our brekkie and you could have the greasy breakfast.”

Brown kicked 594 goals in 256 games for Brisbane and will be remembered as one of the toughest players in the game's history.
