It’s set to be a very different Queen’s Birthday on Monday without the traditional clash between Melbourne and Collingwood at the MCG but that isn’t going to stop the Fight MND campaign, which is one again being spearheaded by Neale Daniher.
While a sea of blue beanies – a now traditional sight every Queen’s Birthday – won’t be able to converge at the MCG in 2020, Big Freeze 6 is set to still take place as players from all 18 clubs go down their own slide as part of a live televised fundraising event on Channel 7 next week.
Fight MND Campaign Director Bec Daniher says they still hope to raise plenty of money to find a cure for Motor Neuron Disease despite the fundraiser having to adapt this year amid the current restrictions.
“COVID is unfortunately not allowing us to have the footy at the MCG on Queen’s Birthday so we’ve had to adapt,” Daniher told sen.com.au.
“Each AFL club has nominated their own sliders and come up with some exciting ideas and taken some footage which will be shown on Channel 7 on June 8. “We’ll be able to display all the excitement of the AFL clubs as well as try to raise as much money as we can.”
Daniher said her father Neale is still remaining positive despite battling the insidious disease.
“Neale is going well,” she said.
“Unfortunately MND is such a beast of a disease and we do know that each year and each Big Freeze when it comes around that his body is letting him down a little bit more.
“He’s struggling to talk as well as he would, breathe and his hands are all gone but the most important thing is he’s such a positive person and he’s fighting against this beast and leading from the front.”
