“I have no sympathy": How McKenna's positive COVID-19 test "changes everything"

2020-06-21T14:46+10:00

North Melbourne great David King says he has “no sympathy” for Essendon defender Conor McKenna after he tested positive to COVID-19 on Saturday.

McKenna returned a low-level irregularity before returning a positive test on Saturday morning.

The bombshell news sent shockwaves through the AFL world this weekend, forcing the immediate postponement of Essendon’s Round 3 clash against Melbourne.

The Herald Sun reported McKenna attended an open for inspection during the week, which would be in breach of the AFL’s strict COVID-19 player protocols.

King said McKenna would have to face the consequences in the coming weeks.

“It’s huge news and it changes everything,” he said on Fox Footy.

“What it does to the fixture, what it does to Essendon, what it does to Conor (McKenna) – I don’t have any sympathy for Conor.

“The bulk of the competition, whether it be players or staff, have adhered to the pretty strict ruling the AFL have put it place. The protocols are there for everyone and he’s clearly gone outside of those.

“I have no sympathy for Conor and he’s got to face what comes but what it does to the game is disastrous really.”
