The stat that underlines Scott Pendlebury’s greatness

Terry Wallace believes Scott Pendlebury is Collingwood’s greatest ever player – and he has a statistic to prove it.

Pendlebury has been model of consistency over his decorated 304-game career and is showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 32.

The Magpies skipper was superb again in Saturday’s win over St Kilda, prompting Wallace to highlight a statistical achievement that puts Pendlebury in rarefied air.

“Watching him play in that game, he just bamboozled the St Kilda midfielders,” Wallace told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“I’ve got one stat that I want to give to you that just explains that. We know how beautiful of a user of the football he is.

“When you’re having a look at players who have had 600 possessions or more in a season, there’s 68 that have done it one time ever.

“When you get up to the high end there’s three players that have had five seasons of 600 plus possessions – Patrick Dangerfield, Josh Kennedy (Sydney) and Kane Cornes.

“Six times, there’s a few blokes in that category – Dane Swan, Scott West and Matty Boyd. Seven seasons – Gary Ablett Jnr, Sam Mitchell and Joel Selwood – some of the greats of the game.

“There’s only been one player ever in history that has had eight seasons of over 600 possessions and he’s one of the best ball users in the game – that’s Scott Pendlebury.

“He is just a star of the game. He is the best Collingwood player that I’ve ever seen.”

Pendlebury is closing in on becoming Collingwood's new games record-holder. He is 10 games shy of eclipsing Tony Shaw's record of 313 matches.
