Melbourne football boss Josh Mahoney admits Melbourne were disadvantaged by the postponement of their clash against Essendon, but are determined to make the most of having a week off AFL action.
After Bombers defender Conor McKenna tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, Sunday’s scheduled match between the two sides was immediately called off.
Melbourne then held an intra-club scratch match at the MCG over the weekend to compensate.
Mahoney said it was all about ensuring the following weeks weren’t even more disrupted as a result.
“We’ve only been disadvantaged because we thought we were well prepared to play Essendon on Sunday,” he said on SEN’s Dwayne World.
“We picked the team, the guys were ready to go so in that sense we were disadvantaged that we just couldn’t play a game. For all the work and preparation you do during the week, you just want to play the game.
“From that sense, yes (we were at a disadvantage). But then the key part of it was just limiting it to be disadvantaged just on that day, we had to make sure it didn’t flow to the next week.
“That’s what it was important to get a game under our belt like we did at the MCG and to make sure it doesn’t flow into the next week or the weeks after that.”
Melbourne will be back in action against Geelong at the MCG on Sunday.
