Why Carlton shouldn't give up on inconsistent high-end talent

2020-06-26T08:42+10:00

Carlton should continue to persist with talented midfielder Sam Petrevski-Seton despite his indifferent form, according to Terry Wallace.

The highly touted Blue was quiet in last week’s stunning upset win over Geelong finishing with just nine disposals and one tackle.

Speaking on the SEN’s The Match Committee, Wallace admitted Petrevski-Seton’s inconsistency is a concern, but his upside makes him a player worth persevering with.

“I think he is (in Carlton’s best side),” Wallace said.

“There are still frustrations there as far as I’m concerned. You go to his best … there was a game last year where he had about 27 touches and really set them up.

“In the back-half of the year when he played off half-back, he played some really good football in that area of the ground, but there are still inconsistencies of performances.

“I think his upside is too big to up on him. Other players … they’re a four (out of 10) at their worst but they are only a seven at their best. I think Petrevski-Seton at the moment is maybe a three or four at his worst, but he can be a nine.

“I just don’t think you can afford to give up on a player with such high-end talent.”

Petrevski-Seton, the sixth pick overall in the 2016 draft, averages 16.4 disposals per game for the Blues.

The 22-year-old has played 67 AFL games.
