The Carlton player “out of his depth” and the Blue who is “all at sea”

Kane Cornes was negative in his assessment of Carlton following their 18-point loss to St Kilda last night.

The Blues started poorly at Marvel Stadium, conceding seven goals in the first half, and subsequently it was the defence which was the subject of critique from the Port Adelaide premiership player.

It was a couple of players in particular who were high on Cornes’ agenda.

“It’s the same issue for Carlton,” he said on SEN’s The Captain’s Run.

“Their defence was so poor last night. Defence collectively but also individually.

“Some efforts from Lachie Plowman who I’m surprised, to be honest, continues to keep getting a game at Carlton. As harsh as that sounds but there’s been significant moments this year where he’s just out of his depth back there.

“I thought (Jacob) Weitering had his poorest night for the year although he’s had a terrific season. He was well beaten by (Max) King.

“Petrevski-Seton is not a defender. I do not know why David Teague continues to persist with Sam Petrevski-Seton as a defender. He’s all at sea back there.

“(Sam) Docherty was tagged clearly and they had to move him out of defence. So the defensive setup was all at sea last night.”

Cornes also touched on the performance of reigning Rising Star Sam Walsh who was down on his best with just 13 possessions which is the second lowest return of his 27-game career to date.

“I’ve been saying it, he’s not a damaging AFL footballer,” he added.

“Carlton fans can scream from the rooftops all they like but he kicked it at 56 percent (efficiency). His metres gained are down, he looks to he handballing the ball (more) and isn’t going to be the damaging footballer that Carlton fans believe and have told me that he is going to be.

“They got that (draft) pick wrong and I think the Carlton fans probably need to admit that.”

After back-to-back wins, the Blues now find themselves with a 2-3 record and sitting 12th on the ladder after five outings.
