The fascinating numbers behind Selwood's milestone

2020-07-03T15:46+10:00

Geelong captain Joel Selwood steps out for a significant milestone this weekend.

When the Cats run out to take on the Gold Coast Suns at GMHBA Stadium, Selwood will cross the line for his 300th game.

We all know what a superb player Selwood has been with his toughness at the ball, his composure in massive moments and his ability to get his side over the line in big games. Not to mention his customary look of some sort of bandaging somewhere on his head to stem another bleed.

And just to add to the occasion, there are some extraordinary numbers behind Selwood’s triple century.

He will become just the fifth player in Geelong Football Club history to reach the mark, joining Corey Enright, Ian Nankervis, Jimmy Bartel and Sam Newman.

He will become the equal fourth fastest player in the history of the game to get to 300, taking 13 years and 94 days, which is the same as Craig Bradley and Scott Pendlebury. Only Adam Goodes, Mark Ricciuto and Jude Bolton have got there quicker.

Selwood has also won 218 of his 299 games to date at a whopping win percentage of 73.08. His wins tally has him sitting 12th on the all-time list and he requires just three mores wins to move beyond Bradley, Enright, Gordon Coventry and Leigh Matthews into outright eighth.

The three-time premiership player will also move into equal sixth position on the most games as captain list where he joins Matthew Pavlich on 190. He is honing in on 200 as skipper which only five players (Stephen Kernahan, Dick Reynolds, Nick Riewoldt, Ted Whitten and Michael Voss) in the history of the game have achieved.

And to top it off, the game marks his 250th with teammates Harry Taylor (who is back in the side) and Tom Hawkins, while Gary Ablett plays his 350th AFL game.

Looking back at past milestones for Selwood (three of which came in premiership years), the Cats lost his debut game to the Bulldogs back in 2007, won his 50th against Brisbane in 2009 and won his 100th over Collingwood in 2011.

He would celebrate a win over Melbourne in game 150 in 2013, enjoy a victory over Sydney in his 200th in 2015, beat the Dees again in game 250 in 2018 and now he looks to make it a clean sweep of milestones (apart from the losing debut) against the Suns.
