Simpson "hopeful" Shuey only misses short-term

West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson is hopeful Luke Shuey will only miss up to two weeks of football.

Eagles captain Shuey did not return to the field after quarter time following an injury to his left hamstring in West Coast’s 34-point win over the Sydney Swans.

Simpson told reporters post-match losing Shuey early was difficult, but adversity was part and parcel of football in 2020.

“I know we lost Luke early, but there are lots of teams dealing with bizarre situations and adversities,” he said.

“They (Sydney) had to sit around for two hours before the game which wasn’t normal.

“Hopefully it’s a one to two-week injury. He’s our captain and we’re going to miss him.”

The Eagles coach said he’s proud of the team’s first win since round one, but he’s not getting carried away.

“We haven’t been too good in our second halves, so I put that challenge to them. Our leaders did their bit,” he said.

“The younger boys I thought were important for our spirit and a sign of our future.

“Our players have really good resilience. I wasn’t losing it last week and I’m not going to get carried away this week.

“We haven’t been too good in our second half, so I put that challenge to them. Our leaders did their bit.

“We won, but we’re behind the eight ball. Adelaide is our next challenge. We’ll recover, do our normal routine and prepare for that.”
